  1. Decreases of 2-6mpg driving is not very intelligent 4WD transfer case, because of its universal values and not on the floor.

  2. A freedom in 2WD is 18mpg highway about 15 ... 4WD mode is replaced by 10-14mpg, but with 4WD, you should try not to mph on 45 or exceed the risk of damage to the transmission and transfer case.

If you use the 4WD for snow and ice, just that if you want to use it, chances are you are just a 35 mph anyway, so you can get more mileage 14mpg or final bit when you're on the gas and brake easy and relatively flat roads. The deep snow or mud creates more resistance, the engine work harder to mpg with a low yield causes.

On a side note, everyone should check with a selectable 4WD a few miles (4-5) in the 4WD every month just for the operating conditions of the transfer case to maintain and, if everything works as it should .. . So if you need it, you will not be accepted. Been there - done that ...
